About Grand Slam

Outdoor Life is challenging its readers to test their skills in a series of pursuits called the Outdoor Life Grand Slam Adventures. These Outdoor Life Grand Slam Adventures were developed to give a reader the chance of a lifetime, an opportunity to take a certain number of species of game in a one-week time period. Our first pursuit was a Western hunting adventure, in which our winner, Stuart Littlefield, joined Outdoor Life editor Todd Smith on a quest to take an Elk, Pronghorn, Mule Deer and Grouse in a one-week time period.

For our second adventure, Outdoor Life Hunting Editor, Andrew McKean, is taking Shawn White into the wild for a chance to accomplish the biggest challenge in the springwoods—a wild turkey Grand Slam. And to take this endeavor to an even higher level, Shawn will have to tag his birds in just nine days. Updates from the hunt are on outdoorlife.com right now.

The adventure begins in Florida, where Andrew and Shawn will kick things off with a hunt for an Osceola turkey. They can’t waste time, though, as they’ll have only two days to tag this elusive trophy before it’s back in the truck and down the highway on a classic road trip to the Midwest. There, they’ll complete the bulk of the challenge by calling and pursuing the Eastern, Rio and Merriam’s.

An outdoor cameraman, courtesy of Realtree, will capture all of the action on video. That’s right, besides publishing the story of this exciting quest in a future issue of Outdoor Life; all of the action will be caught on tape and Web cast on outdoorlife.com. Some footage will appear in a future Realtree All-Stars of Spring DVD.

Our next Grand Slam Adventure will take place Sept 23, 2008 to October 5, 2008 in the wilds of Alaska! Here, one lucky winner will accompany Alaska hunting expert and OL contributing writer, Chris Batin, on a 12-day hunt for brown bear, caribou and black bear. Upland game birds and jump shooting for waterfowl will also be part of the Alaska slam, with fall fishing as a bonus.

All arrangements are being handled through Chris Batin’s Alaska Hunter Publications, [www.alaskahunter.com]. Hunts will be provided by Lost Creek Company [www.alaskafloathunting.com], Alaska Raft and Kayak [www.alaskaraftandkayak.com], and Hidden Alaska Guides and Outfitters [hiddenak.com]. Part of this hunt will be a river float trip while the other part will take place in the higher alpine region for caribou and black bear. Outdoor Life will cover all travel fees and tag fees for one brown bear, one caribou, one fishing/hunting license and one black bear/wolf tag. Chances for success are excellent and the winner can even opt for a second brown bear tag (at their expense) if they desire.

A Realtree videographer will also be along to capture all of the action, which will appear in a future Realtree video and on outdoorlife.com.

If you think you are up to this challenging test and have what it takes to complete our Grand Slam adventure, go to our entry form now and submit your application.
